You want to buy a house but there is a very large old tree in the front yard

The tree clearly overpowers the house and takes away from the curb appeal. So do you do something about that and have it removed or just trim the limbs way back to reduce the volume?

That’s not even a pretty tree. I’d cut it down, altogether.

But it’s not a pretty house, either

Contact one of those tree hugger groups and ask them to transplant the tree. Tell them you are going to cut it down because it poses a safety hazard.

I would cut it way back. Next season if it doesn’t fill out or looks like arse cut it down

#1 rule when planting trees: Don't block view of house. #2 rule when planting trees: Don't plant it so close to where it can fall into house and/or cause foundation problems.
On all 3, chop that phucker down.

Be careful as some cities are tree sanctuaries and you may not be able to cut it down. If it's a protected species you may have to prove it is diseased beyond saving or jump through some other hoops.

I actually thought about putting a really nice tree house in it that connects to the house.

I have a big live oak in my front yard but it's not that close and doesn't hide the entire home. It also shades the house pretty well in the afternoon
