The national debt is a pointless measure. Who cares what it is? It’s not like anyone can do anything to demand payment?
We pay around $800 billion dollars each year on the interest owed for the national debt. To put that into perspective, we are nearly paying more for our debt interest payments than we do for our department of war.
If the government decided to stop paying interest payments, our credit reputation would tank, causing numerous markets to crash. The treasury market in particular relies on the US government's history of never defaulting on interest payments. Long term impacts would include pensions and social security, a banking crisis (loans, savings, insurance, etc), and the end of the dollar as the global currency.
It bothers me when people think we just "print more money" to avoid paying the debt. Printing money increases the debt, which increases interest payments. When interest payments grow too high, we have to make cuts in other areas. Not to mention inflation that occurs with printing money, which causes more pressure on tax payers to make ends meet, which makes it more difficult for the economy to thrive if they are paying higher taxes to pay interest on the newly printed money.
Right now, we are still the world's largest economy by far and ensure global hegemony with our military. You're right that it's not THAT big of a deal in the short term, but the long term consequences are inevitable. We will eventually accrue too much debt, struggle to make interest payments, and actually feel the consequences.

Sucks to suck. You gambled on a stable government that is credit worthy.
Investments can lose value. We can’t afford to pay

Would cutting back on defense help? You need a strong military but is a trillion a year excessive?

With white collar jobs declining growth rate combined with lower birth rates, shift is already happening

I missed where anyone was given a choice to participate in social security

Sucks to suck. Government changes their minds all the time and becomes law. Eat the loss boomer. You had enough opportunities for other areas

It's NOT a handout, dumbass
The same way any form of welfare is a handout.
The boomer generation saved so poorly and wracked up so much debt that they cannot give up on SS, even though destroying the program would benefit their children and grandchildren.
What a failure of a generation.

Is it a handout if someone pays in for years, but then loses their job and needs welfare?
How about think of the future of our country?

The generation that entirely depend on social security and government policies the same ones who want to cut them from younger generation so they don’t have to lose their own.
frick them, they’ve had the greatest growth in history for 50+ years and need social security?

No. But not everyone on welfare meets that definition.

Ok, pay back all contributions with interest and then stop them. Or are you cool just fricking millions of tax payors over?

I find it so very interesting that yo think you get to determine what someone who had their money taken from them and were promised what they would get in return needs.

You dumb mofo if you want the govt to pay that, your dollars will be worthless. Hell you’re dollars are becoming more worthless by the day we’re in debt

Medicare. Medicaid. Social security. Welfare programs. Subsidies.
Emotional downvotes don’t change hard facts
I am in no way defending Democrats, but its not like Republicans become serious about reducing the debt when they're in power. Neither of them give a shite.

Burn the program to the ground and salt the earth.
I would bet that all younger generations would completely vote to give up SS entirely, including what they already put in, if they never had to deal with it again.
It is the boomers who are unwilling to think beyond their own tiny universes.

Sure, they have basically no skin in the game.

I mean, you're literally doing the same thing. You want to frick a bunch of people over for your benefit. How are you different?
