re: “You can no longer work from home”

It’s pretty simple for me. If you want to make it through a downturn, you want to go above and beyond to be the person that they don’t want to let go of. I give people my number to call if they have any issues through the night , because I’d rather be the person to get everything in order before anyone else hears about it. In theory, my extra work i put in, makes my job easier in the long term.
The caveat is, you need to believe that you are compensated well for what you do. I busted my arse to make it to where i am now, i don’t mind busting my arse more so i can retire before 50 while all the clock punches are working until they are 65 if not longer. The mindset of the person who goes above and beyond will win 90% of the time, if you think you are worthless then you are at the wrong place.

More power to you if you are able to retire in your 40s. You'd have to be an exceptionally high earner or business owner. Extra good luck if you have a family. 98% of people that give a crap what another person thinks they do after hours aren't retiring that young.

Ok Craig. For fun, let's play your game.
I'm a salaried employee. I have exceptional performance reviews and have been working from home the entire time. Now my company tells me I am no longer allowed to work from home, and I have to come into the office. Which I do.
At 8:30pm I receive an email from my boss asking about a project. I do not answer the email because, as instructed, I am no longer allowed to work from home.
I am then fired the next day because the email was time sensitive for a client and I did not respond.
Seems reasonable.

I will not be going back to an office for the rest of my career. If my employer decides otherwise, I have three places who are willing to hire me right now and will let me work from home.

I'm not hating on WFH but if the economy turns to shite you might not have a choice. It's been an employee market lately but it won't always be like that. In 2008 you had Wall Street bankers selling insurance a year later.

As a manager, I can tell you, there is always one *hithead in the bunch who will try to ruin the privilege for everyone.
Some of my favorite excuses so far...
Spontaneous vertigo
Incontinence
Back issues
Anxiety
Bring your butt to work.
WFH is a privilege. Don't try to backdoor your way into it.

Wait….what?
The entire question of the thread was whether or not businesses forcing people to work in the office were being hypocritical for expecting people to work from home when they get home.
I am grateful my manager has better reading comprehension skills.

Yeah, I didnt read any of that and just wrote how I felt about WFH. That's on y'all for reading it.

If you were told working from home was no longer allowed, how would you feel about receiving work requests after business hours? I find it hypocritical that a company would tell you working from home is not an option while sending work requests outside of normal business hours and expecting employees to respond quickly. But simultaneously, I’ve worked from home after hours long before covid. So I’m torn on the issue. Thoughts?
It’s the real world, how much do you like the salary you’re getting paid? Someone can replace you, likely getting paid less. Do what they ask or get replaced, it’s not that hard to understand.

I think turtles are lazy. They can absolutely move faster than they pretend to move but they’ve built up a complete lie and now the world only expects them to be slow.
Sorry I know this has absolutely nothing to do with the topic but now that you’ve established the rule that we can just bitch about anything we want I wanted to jump on board. But that’s kind of your fault because you just read this post.
frick turtles.

Goddamn some of you are dense. I haven’t been asked to go back into the office permanently, and I frequently work on off hours. The entire question was whether or not it was hypocritical of companies to tell you that you can’t work from home but expect you to do additional work at home.
Employers should be able to make their rules, and employees are free to abide by them or find a new job. That doesn’t mean hypocrisy doesn’t exist.

As a manager of a team on a hybrid schedule I agree with this. It’s amazing how many people are “sick” on the same 2 days/week

That’s not what work from home means

No shite. Jesus Christ this isn’t that complicated.
Many companies tell people they cannot work from home, but still expect them to work WHEN they are home. All I’m positing is that perhaps that’s a bit hypocritical.

That’s the point, you either do what they ask or you no longer get a paycheck from them. If you like your job and want to continue to get paid then do what they ask or find a new job. It doesn’t matter if it’s at home or in the office and companies don’t give a shite about hypocrisy.
