Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Berlin

The endgame of the war in Europe. 2.3 million Russian soldiers closed in on the capital of Nazi Germany against a German defense of some 770,000 men, women, and children. The resulting clash was one of the most savagely intense battles in world history. For 16 days the battle raged in and around the city. When it was over...some 1.1 million people had been killed, wounded, or listed as missing/captured. The Battle of Berlin, coupled with the Battle of Okinawa on the other side of the world, were two of the last great battles in world history.
And it all began 75 years ago.....yesterday.

It was a failure of incorrect data. For whatever reason, I thought the battle's start date was April 20, but this morning I realized that was the start date for the movie Downfall, not the start date for the actual battle.
Yesterday I thought I still had four days to go. <.<

I cannot recommend this book enough.
It’s the firsthand account of a German teenager who was drafted skit in time to take part in the Battle of Berlin. It’s a fantastic book.

The Russians swallowing East Germany after the Wehrmacht was broken was not as significant a WWII battle as the Russians destroying 6th Army at Stalingrad.
Okinawa, on the other hand, was absolutely legit as a legendary battle.

I've read several books on the last days of Berlin & the immediate days following its fall. Not a humorous subject but I still laff at the stories of Mongol troops taking toilets, faucets, lamps, anything not tied down, back home, no clue as to what made any plumbing fixtures work. Raw savages & as far as I know, I have never seen any stats as to the number of their deaths. Russian generals had them leading every "charge" into the teeth of German defenses, while the Russian troops were held back,

Probably the most horrible aspect of the Soviet invasion of Germany was the widespread rape of female Germans. And the Soviets were not choosy. They raped everything from frail old women to little girls, often in front of their families. It’s been estimated upwards of 2 million women and girls were raped, usually multiple times. And it wasn’t just Germans they went after. There were untold female former concentration camp inmates who once liberated were gang raped. The Red Army was a drunken hoard of animals.
