So they killed it to save it from dying? they didn't want to, they felt they owed it to him

If the options were drowning, rejection by the herd until death, or euthanasia then it sounds like the calf was screwed no matter what

it's not like Bison aren't domesticated all over the country, it could have been relocated, I'll bet ranchers would have volunteered to come get it

I read the article- evidently they tried everything before putting it down.
It’s a tough situation

The herd had already rejected it after the interaction

So you think the baby would prefer to be torn apart and eaten by wolves.

The calf could have spread diseases/ germs to a new herd guy. Put the damn thing out of its misery.

Correct. Regardless of your feelings you have to refrain from helping.

Unfortunately we take a different view with humans, which leads to dependency. "Dont feed the animals" works across all species.

ain't going to spend the day debating about a dead cow but I'm pretty sure they have veterinarians out there? maybe there really wasn't a viable option

Disease control. These isolated herds can have strains of viruses that are unique to that herd and transferring the calf could have spread that strain and created more vaccine resistant mutations that could have devastating effects on a domesticated or hybrid herd.

I doubt it was going to starve in the park.

As others said what about putting it on one of the large farm raised buffalo herds etc.

Seems dumb to euthanize it.

The wolf packs would have feasted on him before dark. Ever seen them kill before? It's a brutal death.

I was expecting this to be like the usual stories of a-hole tourists screwing with wildlife but it sounds like this guy genuinely meant well. Can't be mad about that although the ending sucks.
