Was going thru stuff from the move in August and found an old wooden box with some of Pops' WWII stuff...and realized the brass "U.S." pin (collar badge?) is not the one he's wearing in his cadet pic from Luke AAFB ('42) or his Instructor pic from Chico ('43).
I remember that U.S. pin, cuz it had 2 posts, this one is a single, and the US is on the round background. I know my sister has his "sheild" wings, but nothing else (cuz I just called her) That pin is gone, and it was my favorite as a kid...want a replacement if I can find one, but need to know what I'm looking for.

What is the difference between the 2 types of US pins, and what is the proper name for them? Enlisted vs Officer? I don't think it's Gramps 19's from WWI...all I have of his is the stripe.

Anybody know?
TIA

Enlisted wear that disc on one side and branch insignia (infantry, armor, etc...) on the other.

That's what I thought. It might be something from Uncle on Mom's side...he was Infantry.
What is it called?
Collar badge? Pin?

What's the eagle?
(Disc is for support, not part of it)

Great pictures. I see the WWII Campaign medal top center in the first picture. What other medals did he have?

That was it...his participation trophy
He was married with an infant daughter when he finished flight school, was offered combat or teacher.
He taught basic flight in bi-planes and Texans, and combat maneuvers in
Bell P-39 and Curtiss P-40, but he flew most of the USAAF fighters at the time.
The P-38, he said, "was like racing God himself. It was the most elegant aircraft in the war." Never flew a Corsair or the Navy 'Cats...but pretty much everything else. Even logged hours in B-17s and Liberators. He said the B-24 was "The most piss-poor design ever developed" and "They should've shot that SOB for building the first one."

Thank God he elected to instruct, cuz I wasn't born till '72...may never had existed.

Ok Those 2 must be uncle Billy's.
My Mom's older brother. I didn't recognize either of them.

Yeah, he looks pretty young for that one, plus I'm not sure they even had the CSM rank in ww2.

Billy's wife always called him Sarge. That makes sense.

My wife’s grandfather was in WWII. He landed on one of the beaches during D-day. My FiL told me how bad his PTSD (shell shock) was when he got home after the war. He died fairly young and his medals was lost in the process so my wife’s aunt submitted a record request. His awards included: WWII campaign medal, African Campaign medal, Bronze Star, CIB, and one other that I can’t remember. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him and just listen to him.

Picture to the far right he is a private with a .30 caliber water cooled browning machine gun. Obviously very early in the war. He is also wearing the older style campaign hat that was our uniform from before World War I.

The two other pictures are more modern. He is wearing the uniform of an aviation cadet. He had not been commissioned at the time nor was he a rated aviator.

Glad that you are keeping his memory alive.
