Paternal grandpa on the San Francisco for most of the big battles. Pearl Harbour, Guadalcanal, through the Leyte Gulf I believe. He passed when I was 10 or so and I don't think he talked about it much. Especially Guadalcanal between the ship hit by kamikaze bomber and shooting the shite out the USS Atlanta.

Maternal grandpa was in the Marines and would have been in the bunch that would have invaded mainland Japan.

All I know is my maternal great grandfather did some airwatch or worked a tower in grand isle watching for planes. He used to tell me about German submarines around there.
Maternal great uncle served in Europe. Got hit in a fox hole and paralyzed his left arm. He hand was always in a fist unless he was sleeping.

One of my grandad's was a Navy pilot in the Pacific. He was hit by a kamikaze and captured swimming by a Japanese fishing boat. He spent 2 years as a POW on an island near Kiki Jima where the Flyboys book took place. He had some amazing stories to tell

My other grandad was in the Army and stationed on some island near New Zealand. He said they were there to guard a radio tower that didn't really seem to have much strategic value. He spent WWII shooting wild pigs and cooking them on a beach

My maternal grandfather was a tanker in the 4th Armored Division in France, Belgium, and Germany. If you know anything about WWII and the M4 Sherman tank you know what those guys went through. And he’s the reason I became a tanker myself in 1988.

Paternal grandfather was in the navy, served as a radioman aboard the Fletcher class DD USS Conway in the Pacific.

Maternal grandfather was Marine signal corps. Had a lot of dangerous work fixing comm lines in the thick of battle. Did a lot of fighting too. Never mentioned it once to anyone in his family. My uncles researched it all after he died.

Tarawa and Guadalcanal were among many of the battles he participated in.

Paternal grandfather WW2 was a pilot and copilot in the 401st bombing company. I recently found a website dedicated to the bombing group with most of his mission debriefs.

Paternal Grandfather - Army. Served in one of Patton's artillery battalion's in Europe. Also a French interpreter. Purple Heart. Story goes, he was riding in a jeep when a german fighter strafed or bombed them. Was hit with some shrapnel, non-life threatening. Per the story relayed to me from my Dad and Uncle, the German pilot was shot down and was captured, and was in the hospital bed next to my grandfather.

Another story, my grandpa had 2 brothers, both served. One was a bit of a wild man. My great uncle, no matter what country they were in at the time, would borrow a truck and find my grandpa, grab him, throw him in the truck, and bring him to whatever watering hole they could find.

Another story i was told, is my grandpa, being fluent in French, went into a french cafe/bar one time. Paw paw ordered a drink. Cafe server/bartender mumbled something derogatory towards my grandpa, in french, not knowing he could speak/understand french. My grandpa grabbed the French guy by the collar, shoved his thompson in his face, and cussed him out in french and told the french guy, without us, you wouldn't be a country anymore.

Maternal Grandfather - i believe he was army, but never was told any stories about him.

Both of my grandfather's died before i was born, or while i was too young to remember.

Maternal grandpa - army infantry in Europe, nearly froze to death in the Battle of the Bulge, returned home with nearly every finger and toe deformed from frost bite. Worked the rest of his life as a carpenter, made his fingers fit around a hammer and skill saw and never looked back or talked much at all about his experiences. They don't make them like that anymore.

Maternal- Stormed the beaches of Normandy during D-Day. Later ended up meeting the girl that would become my Grandmother outside of Paris, France and brought her back to Texas. She passed away 4 weeks ago at 94.

Paternal- Drafted into the Army, suffered back injury during Basic in North Carolina, sent home.

Unfortunately both of them were gone before I was born.
