Had a 1986 Navy/Beige from 1990-1994. Great car. Got rid of it and got a 1991 911 carrera 4 cabriolet

Why not?
I do admit that, if you're doing lots of city driving with lots of "stop and go traffic" like on a crowded Interstate, Auto is better. I know this from personal experience driving on the Baltimore - Washington DC interstate route. My manual transmission was pure hell in that situation!

The SL, especially by the time the third gen came out, was more of a touring car than a roaster.
It's closer to the BMW 8 series, Cadillac Edlorado, or Lexus LC than it was to the the Porsche 911, Chevy Corvette, or the BMW Z3/Z4.
