Worst US General of all time?

Kind of a controversial topic as all of these men flew the flag of the United States into battle, but we have had some (not many, thank heavens) bad generals in our country’s history.
Horacio Gates of the American Revolution was pretty bad.
There’s an entire myriad of generals from the American Civil War that fought for the Union that were incredibly inept. McClellan and Burnside in particular.
This is one of the more controversial ones, but Douglas MacArthur is incredibly overrated in the annals of the US military, in my opinion. I think he’s easily the most vain, insubordinate, pompous, arrogant, dictatorial general we’ve ever had. He throughly bought into his own hype and it cost his fighting men’s lives. He was insubordinate to three US Presidents and this is what Truman had to say about him upon his firing:
A MacArthur sycophant, Ned Almond, is also up there in worst generals in US military history. Commanded the X Corps in Korea and promptly got them surrounded by Chinese forces at Chosin after ignoring the mountains of intelligence saying otherwise. If it wasn’t for O.P. Smith taking matters into his own hands, he’d have probably gotten them thoroughly slaughtered up there.
Lloyd Fredenhall and Mark Clark didn’t do well at all in WWII.
William Westmoreland could’ve done a lot better in Vietnam but I do think he was hamstrung quite a bit by Washington.
Who’s your pick for worst US General?
ETA: forgot about Benedict Arnold. All those names are invalid now.

quote:
I fired him because he wouldn't respect the authority of the President. I didn't fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that's not against the law for generals. If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail.

Really, McClellan? He isn’t even in the bottom half of bad general. He made a lot of bad mistakes but he also did a whole lot of good too

Confederate States Of America General Richard S Ewell. The general that replaced Stonewall Jackson. I don’t want your thread to turn into a Civil War crap fest so I won’t elaborate. But Ewell is my pick for sure.

I agree with McClellan. He had control of one of the greatest armies of all time in the Army of the Potomac and did practically nothing with it. Burnside was also a failure when it mattered most at Antietam and Fredericksburg.
Horatio Gates is another one. He tried to undermine George Washington and then saw his own army completely crushed at Camden.

Leonidas Polk
Most famous for marching through a neutral Kentucky to invade Ohio for no reason pulling Kentucky to fight for the Union. Took many battlefield losses, looked at by peers as woefully incompetent, and didn't take orders from superiors.
How did he become a general in the CSA you ask? He was the second cousin of former president James K. Polk and West Point classmate of Jefferson Davis.
So it comes to no surprise that the worst US Army installation in the contiguous United States is named after him: Fort Polk, LA.

Almond was pretty bad and there were some pretty bad Union Army generals too. Burnside at Fredericksburg stands out.
Disagree with me if you will but Stanley Mc Chrystal is no jewel. What did he accomplish in the Afghan theater? Nothing.
Covered up the Pat Tillman episode and was responsible for Abu Ghraib.

McClellan was something of a copperhead.

He could’ve ended the war in like one or two battles had he done something.
Instead he had Lee surrounded and did nothing. Which allowed the Army of Northern Virginia to escape and the war to drag on two more years.

quote:I'm not getting into a heavy history debate so I'll just say two things and leave it alone. First, I am by no means an expert of military history. Second, all mistakes aren't created equal.

But I have no issue learning something new from those that have more knowledge on the subject.

I’m not asking a question about other countries and other cultures’ militaries.

Thanks for that, I didn’t know what War was. Now, explain to me how MacArthur didn’t uselessly throw his men’s lives away due to his arrogance.
