commonly used sports cliches

Yes but that simple logic is perfectly fitting for those instances when you don't feel like arguing with or explaining yourself to someone.

It's not a sports cliche, but "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes," has a distinct Millenial tone that I find irritating.
