There are 1 day retire/rehires just hanging on in the top levels. Them and people with 30-40+ years. None of them want to go home. I don’t get it. It’s like I’m waiting for someone to die to move up.

Not as big a deal as you think it might be. I am a man of leisure when I want to be and I work my arse off when I have to. I am always busy and I don't miss the old profession.

I hear about retirees who genuinely miss work.
My wife and I stay as busy with family, friends, volunteering, and travel as we want.
FYI, paying the house off before retiring, not having any other debt and not having to financially support our adult children is liberating. We might feel differently if we had those expenses.
