Did 500 sqft pavers with poly sand and 20 tons of crushed granite from a quarry down the road. Tamped with a slight grade then did same with sand, although the granite was so small and really wasn't necessary. Tamped that and then laid then out in the I formation. Then put cinder blocks 3 stacks high around the whole thing except 2 entrances with large block pillars. Ran 12v lines thru everything then filled the walls and pillars with another 10 tons of crushed granite. Mortared the front and back of everything with engineered stone veneer with the corner pieces. Bought colored concrete wall caps from a place in cali that had bull nose edges and overhung a bit for underseat lighting. They also sold pillar tops with holes in the middle for easy lamp installs on the pillar tops. Had a fire pit in it off to the side a bit too.
Would never do it again. Good lord.
Building a 5 foot fence now with the black Wild Hog Railing welded wire and teak/IPE framing and top rail boards, and it's been a breeze.

There are specs on-line for proper paver installation. If properly installed, the above mentioned concerns are unwarranted.

If you aren't going to go by the specs then don't consider pavers. If you do, then pavers are a great option. Concrete will crack. There are two kinds of concrete. Concrete that's cracked. And, concrete that's gonna crack. Wood will rot. Period.

Can you recommend any good concrete contractors in the area (Dallas)? I've left messages for 2 and have yet to hear back.

Like I said, I do mostly commercial work so don't know any residential contractors. My neighbor had a new driveway put in a few months ago and the guy did a good job....excavated about 18" of dirt and put in a substantial gravel sub-base. I will see if I can get that name for you.

I got these names from my neighbor who has used both guys and been happy with their work. But he said they are super busy like everyone else so he doesn't know if you'll have much luck with getting them to return your call.

I've always been a fan of a really nice paver patio. That's just me, though.
