The rule of law isn’t making him act wishy-washy and contradict himself on the issue in public. That’s a choice. He can be consistent in his message without demanding anything.

Here’s what it looks like to me: Trump wants to reopen. His advisors want a more measured approach. Whether that’s for scientific or political reasons doesn’t really matter - either way there appears to be disagreement. So Trump goes back and forth between an abundance of caution on one end and this whole thing being a hoax on the other end. Meanwhile, the people selected by the administration to be the public faces throughout this thing are pushing another contradictory message.

To me, it looks like Trump is trying to have his cake and eat it too. If this turns out to be a huge overreaction he wants to be able to say “See? I was right all along.” If everything reopens and there’s a devastating second wave of infections he wants to be able to say “The governors made those choices, not us.” Here’s the problem: you can’t accomplish shite without picking a strategy. You can’t have it both ways.

Instead of the administration picking a strategy and communicating it clearly and consistently, we have mixed messages that constantly change depending on the messenger and the venue. We have CDC guidelines. But it’s a hoax. But I didn’t mean an actual hoax. We need to reopen. Georgia screwed up. This isn’t leadership, it’s dysfunction. Hell, you have one side saying “Trump wants to reopen but the governors make the decision” and the other side saying “the governors are following CDC guidelines.” How in the hell can both of these things be true under a competent administration?

And before someone says “but he’s fighting the MSM, and Pelosi, and Obama, and...” ask yourself: are any of these factors really affecting the president’s ability to communicate a strategy, or are they excuses? Did you vote for Trump because you wanted him to obsess over press coverage, or did you vote for him because you wanted him to be a leader?
