yeah but we're talking about Hogan being a national and mainstream star
sunday morning on usa in some community center with a small crowd wasn't "wrestlemania" if you know what i mean.
i don't know if it has been said or needs to be said, but he was bigger than the business.

I realize he was the best face of all time and these days wrestling is all about the heels. Because no face can measure up to Hulk Hogan
I have seen two wrestlers at their peaks in popularity that could be considered rivals when the full context is considered.
The Junkyard Dog during his mid-south run was in the top five of greatest faces ever. This was a black man in a deep south territory that had white people driving into the hood (New Orleans Municipal Auditoriun) to watch him beat up white guys. It was truly a remarkable thing considering the time and location.
Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania XXX was the most over face I think anyone could possibly imagine. The guy had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. The angle with the authority leading up to that moment was brilliantly booked. If his career hadn't been trashed by injuries the Yes Movement could have been to the 2010s what Hulkamania was to the 1980s.

Not a chance in hell Vince would have allowed this to happen. There was some truth in HHH and Stephanie calling him a B+ star. WWE never saw him, or any smaller guy, as someone they could build the company around. You have to have a certain look to be the man and right now Roman Reigns has that look.
Bryan only got his match with HHH at that Mania because Punk quit. He was inserted into the main event because the fans obviously didn't care about Orton vs Batista. In fact Batista was supposed to be the face but he was constantly booed. They were basically forced to change the main event. Same thing happened a few years when Roman was supposed to beat Brock but they had Seth cash in instead. Every once in a while Vince will listen to the fans if its overwhelming, but ultimately Vince will get his way. Bryan's title reign after Mania would have lasted at most until SummerSlam if not for his injuries.

I agree. I think Hunter may be as big of a douche..in different ways, but half as talented.

I don't disagree that Vince may not have supported it, but he is smart enough not to argue with the green. People were buying Daniel Bryan merch at Cena/StoneCold/The Rock/Hogan levels. As long as that was sustained he was a main event player.

Well he ditched it for a few years and became a biker.
I think I had checked out of wrestling by that point. Still a long run for a gimmick like that when most had fallen by the wayside.

Look at how they booked Rey Misterio as champ. He was constantly getting jobbed out to much bigger guys on Raw in non title matches. They made him look really weak. The only reason WWE even kept him around as long as they did was because he sold a ton of merch and brought in the Mexican audience.

I don't think wrestling will ever get back to the heights it enjoyed long ago.

Outside of his heel turn which is one of the top 3 undisputed GOAT moments in wrestling history. Hulk Hogan was the absolute worst he never had decent match in his life and his gimmick sucked shite. Nash and Hall carried him.

quote:nope. part of that is the cultural environment, part of that is they have no competitors, part of that is the big sports leagues are basically "sports entertainment" with all the manufactured drama and gossip, but the biggest reason is that it has now spent almost 20 years outside of the mainstream pop culture. it has a negative reputation that precedes it that no matter what kind of star or stars come along, it won't be the way it was.

HHH is a huge mark for himself, and his ego is rapidly approaching Vince MCMahon levels. He thinks he's much better than he actually is. I lost all respect for him after seeing the Bret Hart: Wrestling with Shadows documentary, where he cowered like a scared little boy when he was confronted by Bret's wife... then the next night on RAW he was hamming it up w/ Shawn.
Posted on 4/4/17 at 5:15 pm to lsucoonass
I don't think Punk is a douche at all. I think he was smart to go out in his own terms and gave a big "frick you" to the company as well. Then to top things off his wife did the same thing.

The way you feel about hhh is how I felt about Bret hart not too long ago (this was when he had his own podcast).
He said that hhh never had a great match, I think hhh is hall of fame worthy but not as iconic as hulk hogan; but Bret saying that just is a lie

I thought the fact that he sucked as a pure wrestler played into the heel role pretty well. He would inevitably get into trouble whoever he was facing, be it Sting or Luger or whoever, and the NWO would have to save his butt. It made you hate him even more.
Don't know if that's what they were going for but it was compelling, like what is it going to take to get the title off of this guy?
Posted on 4/4/17 at 5:34 pm to Goldrush25
That's exactly what they went for.
I think Goldberg and Luger took the title from Hollywood hogan

Hogan participated in the single wrestling moment where wrestling broke out of backroom rundown bars and nerd's bedrooms and brought pro wrestling to the mainstream......When he slammed Andre at WM3 (I think).
That allowed Vince to spend the money to create people like HBK, Brett, Stone Cold, Rock, Lesnar, Cena, etc.
Vince owes a lot of his success to the sheer luck that Hogan was the right guy at the right time to do that....They were lucky to have each other.
Now granted Vince's smarts allowed him to reinvent the business many times over. It could be argued that the Austin 3:16 speech at King of the Ring 97 (I think) was the biggest moment in wrestling history.
Also could argue that of Hogan's turn at Bash at the Beach.
