Here's why that won't happen: whoever breaks NK owns it and no one wants to own NK, not even SK.
First decade would be brutal, granted.
However, if China or South Korea got to keep their resources, the ROI would incredible. They are sitting on a lot of resources apparently.

You make a valid point but I'm not seeing NK being fixed in 10 yrs. Fixing NK is equal to fixing Afghanistan without the terrorists; a country 500 yrs behind everybody else.

I know frickall, so my opinion is of little value, but I believe the liberation would have to come from within as a military coup. China, US, and SK don't want to deal with the mess of a war. SK is essentially staring down the barrel of untold numbers of artillery, and the US and China don't see an economic incentive to liberate.

We could certainly improve on it. They won't be shooting at us for liberating them. A vast majority of that country lives in extreme famine and poverty, but its not because their region or climate causes it. Its because their government forces it.
I think they would rebound MUCH quicker than anything in the Middle East. Not to mention millions would flee to South Korea and China.

China would have a ton more port cities and a ton more resources. They would have taken it years ago if it was called South China. Its not, its called North Korea and China knows the backlash would be bad internationally if they claimed Korean land as theirs.
South Korea is very heavily populated. Even a handful of successful missile strikes from the North could kill millions. Thats the issue. They would misfire or miss a large percentage of strikes, but it only takes a few.

Also, I wouldn't put it past Kim Jong Un to nuke his own country into oblivion if his demise is imminent. That dude is absolutely crazy.

It will never be finished in time, the world's worst hotel.

Agree but the problem is how much it would cost us to "help" them rebuild but we could always say that NK's natural resources would pay us back just like Iraq.....oh wait....never mind

Agree but $$$$$$$$

No....SK & China wouldn't let them except in rare family reunions; no mass exodus.

Rare family reunions?
Like 1/3rd of all South Koreans have family of some sort in the North.

Your gasbagging in this thread is hilarious but then you say this
Oh my bad, I'd hate to have an actual discussion on a fricking discussion board.
quote:
How little do you know about their relationship? The only reason China "supports" NK is because they don't want a massive influx of refugees. This is also why SKorea doesn't stroke the fires. NK refugees find it nearly impossible to assimilate into South Korean or Chinese culture. Being an economic ally does not equal being an ally that you will help defend with your troops. You think Russia wants North Korea to have a nuclear weapon? Despite all the rhetoric between Putin and Obama do you really believe Russia gains more economically from North Korea than they do from the US? Oh yeah, China really wants to get into a war that might drag the US in, it's not like China and the US are economic partners or anything
First of all, I wasn't referring to Russian and/or Chinese support in terms of either of those countries committing actual troops to a conflict. There are much more effective means of support.
Secondly, we're talking about the future here. The current state of Sino-US and Russian-US relations is irrelevant, the entire global political climate can change in a heartbeat.
China has the world's largest population, second largest economy, and is the US' biggest creditor. As their need for oil and other natural resources continues to grow with its population, so too will their aggressiveness on the world stage.
Imagine if the US economy collapsed and the Yuan became the world standard and reserve currency, which would in turn make China the world's only superpower? You think they wouldn't try to expand and create more Socialist states, just as the Soviet Union had done?
I could definitely see political/economic turmoil in the future lead to proxy wars in Korea and and other parts of Asia.

Does NK and Iran have any sort of pact?

I don't know if they have an official "pact" or anything but they do maintain diplomatic relations. They also deal with Cuba, Venezuela, and the like.

Okay. So the underfed and under-equipped North Korean army will win a war without man power from China or Russia

Like what, giving NK a nuke?

We need to learn our lessons from Vietnam and wars in the mideast. You can't give an indigenous people freedom and liberty, they have to earn that for themselves as its the only way it will stick.
The thing is though, I don't even think the North Koreans as a whole even realize it is an option.

Against the US? No.
Against S. Korea? Yes
The DPRK has the capability to annihilate S. Korea with the push of a button.
quote:
Like what, giving NK a nuke?
Missile technology, money, oil, food, arms, planes, ships, etc.; the same thing the USSR did the first go-round.
China's political influence alone could keep the US out of a North/South conflict. If DPRK used a nuclear weapon against S. Korea we would stay out of it, we're not going to have WWIII because of a conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

China's economy collapses if this happens
I disagree. Their economy would suffer greatly but would rebound quicker than everyone else.
It's already happened, when the British Sterling was replaced by the US Dollar in the late-'70s and early-'80s; which ultimately lead to the decolonization and fall of the British Empire and their loss of status as a world superpower.
