Trying to decide if I should run telephone lines when I run electrical in my new house. Should I run the lines to be on the safe side?

Go ahead and put in telegraph lines as well. You never know.

Don’t forget the option for smoke signals and pigeon messengers in case the NK’s detonate that EMP

Whether they make a comeback or not, you should absolutely run the lines.

It can be done at a fraction of the cost at this point, compared to later.

Everything is full circle. I’d say the hipsters will turn it around soon.

It’s so cheap it seems like it wouldn’t hurt. Besides remember AT&T towers were down in the 2016 floods here

to be honest, I don't think land lines will come back. However, I am old-school and would probably consider installing wires depending on the cost involved.

Might as well. Not that expensive, and having the hardware doesn't mean you have to subscribe right away.

It would be better to run CAT 6 cable instead of plain old twisted pair. You can still use it for telephones and have the added benefit of running ethernet in the house for streaming devices.

Wireless is great but in some cases with cord cutting, an ethernet connection is going to be far more superior to wi-fi.

Run the lines but do not install those God awful plates in the wall. Just keep a diagram of where the run and then if you ever need it, install the final terminals. I hate seeing those wall plates everywhere for old phone hookups

You should run a flexible tubing to be able to pull data lines. Something like this so you can change easily in the future:

1. Having a land-line for emergencies is cheap. Also, cell phones are not as accurate for 911 calls when tracing your location.

2. DSL uses your existing phone lines. Even if you don't use DSL, there could be future technology that uses those same phone lines.

1. Not true. CAT6 instead
2. Ethernet CAT6 cables from a network

It’s not 1999

I guess we are quibbling over definitions. If there are other types of cables that would also work for the same purpose, then install those.

When Disaster strikes hurricanes/floods the land line (not VOIP) still works.

Cell towers go down and cell phone batteries run out of charge when there is no power.

I would definitely run a couple the cost is almost nothing you can even pull the wire yourself.

While that's all fine and dandy, we all know Morse code is the way of the future.

The lines would be nice to have for your security system. Even with cellular security it is nice to have hardline backup in case of power loss. It is also a good idea to lay a piece of PVC pipe under driveway and sidewalks so it is easy to run wires under them at a later date if needed. Just be sure to mark them. Might as well let AT&T drop you a fiber optic line in the trench while it is open.
