They called it the "500 year flood."

I don't know of anyone who can love that long.

You know that doesn't actually mean that it only happens every 500 years, right?

That just means it has a 0.2% chance of happening during any given year.

I've lived through 2 already, and I'm not even 30. I'm going to say probably.

Edit. I wouldn't start building an ark or anything, but I'm sure after Katrina people wondered if they would ever see anything even remotely as bad in So LA.

shite, the odds are terrible for coastal residents for Katrina like storms. Camille to Katrina was 36 years. Let's hope that the average is longer than shorter over geologic time.

Yes, almost certainly. If not over the exact same ground, within a 75-100 mile radius.

Remember, there have been four 100+ year floods in Louisiana in the last year alone. Shreveport, NELA, Northshore, and BR. You can be dismissive of climate change all you want, but one of the predicted indicators is more torrential rainfall events.

you can't compare katrina to the current situation. that's two different locations and had flooding for two different reasons. will places that are prone to flooding (either through natural or man made) flood like this again, yes. will places that experienced this flood because of the freak rain event flood again anything like this, not while anyone here is alive.

We thought the same thing in 1983. Didn't work out that way

I admittedly don't know anything about the 1983 flood. What percentage of areas that flooded this year were also affected by the 1983 flood but not any others?

I don't know the percentages mainly because I was in high school at Redemptorist and lived in north Baton Rouge at the time. It was real bad for central, denham, south Livingston and ascension parishes. I remember hurricane creek back flooding a large part of north Baton Rouge particularly around the winbourne/Howell park area. This go round those same areas flooded but much worse. For example, in 83 the campus of Redemptorist had no water and from what I heard this go round the campus flooded.

We live in south Louisiana. We will always see floods. Maybe not on the magnitude of this one, but we will have more major floods. I can remember the "once in a lifetime epic flood" that Allison brought us. This flood was biblical though.

Yes I was there for 83, Andrew, Katrina, 2016 and the others in between.
If 1983 was impossible how is it here we are again today ?
