re: Why we don’t have herds of buffalos roaming the prairies anymore

I thought people were trying to say it was all because of American settlers, my bad. The numbers just don’t add up, unless I’m missing something. Disease/nature had to have a heavy hand in the dwindling numbers.

1870’s- 30-60 million
The highest amount of buffalo I have seen/read killed in a year was 2 million. That doesn’t add up to over hunting. At least 15 million calves would be birthed a year to replace the ones that were killed. At the very minimum 2 million calves would survive to breed.
