It definitely happens. My friend's wife and his mother were robbed of their wedding rings in uptown NOLA. Dude had jumped the fence and was waiting in their courtyard. All he wanted was the rings and ran off.

Diamonds have (at least now they do) an ID laser etched on them so small you can't see it. I have the paperwork on my wife's ring including that ID

only if you pay extra to have it laser engraved

so it would be a lot harder for a thief to sell and profit from without getting busted than just cash.
its not hard to remove the laser engraving, no pawn shop is going to report it.

I've always wondered why false claims on ring insurance isn't more prevalent. It seems like it would be close to impossible to get busted.

I’ve never really thought about that, but now all of a sudden I’ve been at a moral crossroads for a couple minutes.

ETA: I do know that if my wife ever loses her’s, the replacement is going to be about 20% of the insurance money.

Because not everyone is a criminal and files fraud claims.

This. Resale on jewelry isn't that high. Engravings will lower the value.

That's an engagement ring. A wedding ring is generally solid gold, often 14 karat gold, and that's a fungible material and a pretty expensive one. I've sold them, and you're looking at $200+ even for a single band.

Never mind I just googled it. Fighting Back

My wife wears hers almost all the time. There was some discussion when we first got married about getting a copy but it made no sense to me, it is insured. Why pay the money if you are just going to wear a CZ.

What is the outward result of consistent inbreeding of 10 generations of “two in the pink, one in the stink” culture?
