Why is zoning an HVAC so expensive

Quote between three units vs zoning with two was about $1700 cheaper with two. Aside from tonnage, seems like outrageous amount. Any insight on why this is?

each unit needs refrigeration piping and duct connections, plus each unit indoor and out door needs power connections and control wiring from indoor unit to outdoor unit plus wiring to T-stat.

Confusing question. You state HVAC zoning is expensive, then state 2 units with zoning is cheaper than 3 units.

A guess from the hip with little experience is that the labor to set up the zoning for two units is more than the labor for 3 units, and the only additional costs for the 3 units is parts?

The units aren't apples to apples.

Yes, it's adding 1/2 tonnage to 2nd system and a t-stat, but you are using one less unit, which is where I assumed the majority of cost was associated to. Going from 5800 to 4150 seems like a small savings IMO when getting one less entire unit. Even with 3rd unit, still need ductwork and t-stat. Just trying to understand the reasoning.

Modulating motorized dampers, the thermometers to monitor each zone, the main control system to control the zones, any additional local control boxes you might want in certain zones, and the time to install all that hardware are not cheap.
It's more hardware and wiring to install a zoned DX system than a straight DX system, so it's not just a straight comparison of tonnage. You pay similarly between the two systems for the raw cooling capacity, but then all the additional hardware and labor is basically extra in a zoned type system.
