If I had to guess, I would say females view QVC more than males, by a long shot maybe, but there are a fair share of men who will buy into some bullshite product.
With that said, when I was a kid I remember my mom bought these mini satellites that you supposedly hooked to the antenna of your TV and it would give you over 300 channels. My dad always lived by the "if its too good to be true, it is" philosophy and advised my mom that it was a complete bullshite product.
She bought two.. They didn't cost much.. Maybe $10 or something, but when she got them in.. They were pretty much pieces of plastic in the shape of a satellite. As to why it is easy to sell crap, I have no clue. The average person is easy to sell to.
