Prob has something to do with the 4 months of darkness.

It doesn't have 4 months of darkness.....in the middle of winter the sun still comes out for about 4 hours.

Anchorage's problem starts with natives being given Government checks and they drink it up.

I know people who never left the state as a kid and have been on probation/parole for all of their adult life so now they are in their 30s have never visited any of our 49 other states and aren’t even allowed to leave if they had the means to. It’s an odd place for sure. I try to keep to the interior but Wasilla and the people from there tend to be the worst from my experience.

Alaska is the last frontier. You know how outlaws and scoundrels moved out west in the 1800s & 1900s? They move to Alaska now.

Anchorage's being on the coast moderates the climate. Winters there are about like in the upper midwest. So, survivable for a person with a tent and a place to get warm once in a while. You don't have to go very far into the interior, like 40 or 50 miles, for outdoor winter living to be extremely dicey for someone without survival skills and good gear.

large number of homeless folks in Anchorage. It has a huge homeless problem for its population.

Additionally, many of the homeless are native and they cannot handle their alcohol very well. The ones that aren't homeless live in low income houses with multi-generational family members and live like they would in the village. Their culture with alcohol has collapsed and domestic abuse/violence occurs quiet frequently.

Further, drugs like black-tar heroine have made the problem exponentially worse (not including the fetanyl problem).

Yep. I was assigned to spend a few months in Alaska for work. I was younger at the time, not married, and without kids, so I knew I had to go fall on that sword.
While beautiful, it's fricking miserable. As mentioned, it's dark, depressing, and expensive. More so, you have that shadiest of the shady there. People with a deep, dark past that get "no questions asked." I absolutely hated it, and the majority of the people I worked with.

During the day, you are going to be OK for the most part unless you are in some sketchy areas that you aren't supposed to be. Downtown Anchorage is fine during the daytime/evening hours, but can become a bit sketchy closer to bar closing times (2AM, timeframe for last call 1AM-2AM).

I've never felt completely uncomfortable in downtown Anchorage at night (I've felt infinitely more uncomfortable at night in New Orleans for instance). If you want a funky place like a nightclub to go to Chilkoot Charlie's in Spenard. That will give you the full Alaska nightlife experience.

One little bit of advice I'll give you, if you get invited to Gaslight NEVER go. Then there is 100% chance bad things might happen to you, particularly if you are white.

I spent some time in Valdez. Spectacular place, but I could see it getting claustrophobic in the winter.

I won't be spending much time there. Fly in late, go to hotel.

Next day hit walmart for supplies and head out. Then return a week later, spend the night, fly out the next morning.

Most of the trip will be Glacier View, fairbanks, Denali, talkneeta, and Seward areas.

The really only way to judge crime is the murder rate. Property crimes in southern cities (like Jxn, MS) goes either unreported or unfollowed up on by police (or written up as vandalism, etc.)

Murders are the one thing that can't be covered up (although if there is any possible to classify it as a suicide they will).

This is a bit of an overstatement. I wouldn't say that people in Anchorage are shadier than any other place I've been to.

The dark and depressing part I get, some people don't adjust to that life well. I did, but I've seen others who haven't.

The summers make up for the winter a large bit, but if you stay active in the winters (tons of skiing trails and places to walk, skate, snowmachine outside of town, etc) it's really not that bad.

It can be, but many people that live there have the accessories to get out and enjoy things (snogos, etc.)

Plus lot of people usually travel during the winter (either to Anchorage or elsewhere) to get out of where they are living.
