re: Why don’t we treat long haul truckers at least as good as we treat military & vets?

They can make a metric frick ton of money, and unless they're in their trucks, you wouldn't recognize some of them just being out and about.

Da fuq? Last time I checked I don’t remember seeing a long haul trucker taking a full IED blast with multiple casualties?
I dont remember seeing 99.99% of veterans doing that either
There are lines of people at the VA that think they did that sitting at a computer somewhere in Kansas
But they didnt

Because they drive in the left lane too much.

Next month makes 23 years that I've been trucking my arse off. Most of it longhaul. I bitch about it while I'm doing it, but I always end up missing it when I take a break and get an office job.
Some people think it involves just sitting behind a wheel all day. It's way more involved with a lot of work that we don't get paid for. Especially in the winter. Most of us sacrifice time with friends and family to make a living. Many drivers spend most of their lives alone in solitude. It can take an emotional and social toll. It's definitely not for everyone.
We put up with a lot if shite. Rude shipping and receiving clerks, parking shortages, a lack of access to clean bathrooms, shitty customer service and shitty, overpriced food at truck stops.
I see another poster complained that truckers are entitled. Maybe some are. But 4-wheeler drivers act like they are the only ones who have the right to be on the roads. You actually are #3 in line behind the military and commercial transportation with regards to who has priority over the interstate highway system in the event of emergencies. If anything truckers have more of a right than you do. The interstate system was primarily made for commercial transportation, not for the a-hole with the sunglasses and goattie in the Dodge Ram 2500 with a Punisher sticker tailgating me and then cutting me off.
I get tailgated and cut off every single day. It gets real annoying after a while. It's also unsafe and wrecklesss. No matter how pissed off or impatient you get. I've seen my share of idiots turn their vehicles into twisted and mangled metal as a result. It's not a game out here and it's certainly not a race.
With that being said, I do love my job and I am proud to have contributed to my country in my own way while making a comfortable living for my 3 kids as a single dad. It's an honorable profession.
But I do not look for praise or special treatment. As someone else mentioned, most of us contribute to our country in different ways. Wether it be the soldier, trucker, welder, farmer, policeman, teacher, etc. I appreciate all those people including the truck stop cafe server busting her arse on her feet for 9 hours making sure we have a hot meal before going home to her kids after her shift. We are all cogs in a wheel.

This post is insane.

Nope. Sewage treatment plant operator.
They have to take shite from everyone, and if they stop working, everyone’s shite backs up into their houses. This is similar to when all the body parts made a case for being the boss until the a-hole clamped up and nearly killed the whole body, proving you just have to be an a-hole to be the boss.

Because it's more about the appreciation of willing to forgo living in the name of serving your country.

Long haul truckers probably won't exist in the not to near future.
They'll have AI trucks that drive themselves til they get near the destination city. Then a CBL guy will climb in to take it a short trip to park it.
They might have someone ride in it the long haul just for safety, but not a real trucker.
Yep. It'll be good for supply chain in the long run, but Gordon Jr already has sweaty palms trying to figure out how he's going to continue his dad's grift.
I'm interested to see how resting hours are affected if you still have to have an observer in an AI truck.

Watching brake checkers get rear ended is a fun YouTube hole.

Those trucks are probably both governed, so your anger needs to be pointed at your politicians who haven't established a national regulation for speed governance among all commercial vehicles.
When I drove a commercial vehicle it was governed to 65 mph. If I came up on a vehicle doing 64, I passed it, then got back over.
Trucks have higher priority on the road than personal vehicles do.
