dashcams have been around since the mid 2000s and are an invaluable tool for accidents and crime not to mention cheap as shite.

i would much rather pay an extra $500 to have a factory system in my car than the stupid 'self parking' shite that nobody uses or the other 73 cameras installed that point at the ground to help idiots back out of a parking spot.

i'm purchasing one for a 2018 vehicle we just bought and i'm not comfortable having the minimum wage monkeys at best buy pop trim off my car to hide the wires or that they'll splice the correct fuses so i'm trying to youtube-educate myself on doing it and i'm a little nervous about cracking a piece of trim (so i wont get any trim from my wife ever again).

anyone bought a car recently that came with a factory dashcam?

probably depends on who they're representing in the case

i was amazed at what you can get for $100-$200 on amazon
- front and rear cams
- 4k
- gps built in to provide evidence of where incident happened, speed, etc.
- parking mode so your car is watching whats going on around it even while you're in bed.
- power management so it wont drain your car battery

installation should take 5 minutes except routing/hiding the wire is a PiTA in vehicles.

Garmin Mini Dash Cam. Get it from Crutchfiled and get the hard wire kit and fuse tap. Should take you all of 30 mins to hard wire it in and hide the wire. You will need a micro SD card, too.

first time someone runs your wife off the road and then lies to the insurance company about it so you end up at fault and you'll wish you opted for the $500.

its cheap insurance.

The insurance defense bar is larger and more influential than the plaintiff's bar.

i looked at that one. love the tiny size.

problem is the only switched power fuse in my vehicle is in the rear so i have to run a wire all the way to the back of the vehicle anyway so might as well get both front and rear.

its not remotely a '30 minute' job to hardwire my car.

Just more shite to integrate, calibrate, route through the BCM, etc. I have one in my truck, and it’s great.

I could see how manufacturers haven’t included it because it’s not a feature many people would require or be willing to pay extra for. However, with the current proliferation of cameras in vehicles already, I’m not sure why there’s not a function or add-on to simply record that video. I think the Corvette and Camaro have a track package that includes a camera and overlay of basic engine info.

the one i'm looking at uses a capacitor instead of batteries and has an inline voltage regulator on the hardwire kit so it will disable 'parking lot mode' if the battery drops below a user-configurable threshold.

They're valuable, but only if you're in the right. We switched out entire fleet of 3000+ trucks from just GPS to cam+GPS and while we caught some people trying to screw us, we caught our guys acting like morons just as often.

i would think they would behave a bit better knowing they're on camera but in either case, its still a win for you.

I thought the same thing and was wrong. But yes, its a big investment but also a big win when you're trying to change a driving culture.

Doesn't Tesla have them, or as an option? They will be a thing soon no doubt, or at a minimum a security version of that which will film when there is a vibration to the car.

People think twice or 3 times before running my wife off the road, but thats besides the point.

Cars have gotten stupid expensive with all the tech.

mexican landscaper with a trailer did this a month ago to my wife; had gotten on the side of the road so she thought he was having a mechanical and kept going only for him to spring from the grass to block the road (he was making an illegal U turn across 2 grass fields) and she took a 45 degree angle into the grass on the opposite side of the road..he kept coming into the grass (he never looked to see if there was someone behind him) and clipped her in the rear right and redirected her into a stone pillar.

totalled a brand new car.

i showed up 10 minutes later & took pics.

he lied and said she was trying to pass across a double line.

police report backed me up and because this all happened in the middle of a wet grass field it was clear what happened.

his insurance company somehow found my wife at fault and said 'no pay'.

i got a lawyer and was about to go nuclear on them and suddenly they reversed course and paid everything.

so theres that..

a dashcam video would have ended his bullshite before it started and saved me from a month of phone calls and notarized letters.

eta every car i own is getting cameras after that.
