Why don't dashboard HUDs show check engine codes?

So I'm driving this new $60k truck from the dealership while they work on my much less expensive Colorado. The check engine light came on (800 miles on a 2017 2500 Silverado HD). The dashboard HUD will tell me tire pressure, transmission fluid temperature, track MPG, The infotainment center will mirror my iPhone screen...but for some reason neither can show the OBD II code, and instead a useless yellow light still pops up on the dash. Cars have built in wifi for crying out loud, why the hell cant it just display the code info on the HUD?

Sorry, rant over.

Because then you wouldn't need to take it to the dealer to find out the code and just fix it while you're there.

An HUD needs only display the speed and present gear...that is what they were originally designed for. When a car is driving at 120+mph on a track, the driver doesn't have to look down at the instrument cluster and away from the track/road.

All the other crap in an HUD in a sedan is useless--just look down.

I mean I thought about that but you sill don't have to do that. Every single auto parts store will let you use a code reader for free. And even if you do that, tell the dealership the code, they still charge you a diagnostic fee to hook up to their nicer OBD II reading software. So putting it in the cars HUD wouldn't stop them from charging the diagnostic fee and the guys/gals that are gonna try and fix it themselves would still go that route since they have access to free code readers anyways.

You can get a wireless interface to plug into the car from amazon that your cell phone can attach to and read wirelessly

Really? You think they want to not charge you $150 at the dealer to diagnose?

They charge you that even if you walk in with the code from your own reader. They would still charge a diagnostic fee if your HUD popped up P20EE - NOX sensor. And the guy who's gonna go to autozone and use a reader or buy his own, go to some forums, and try to fix himself will still do that.

The diagnostic fee charge $ argument doesn't make any sense to me.

There is usually a sequence of turning the ignition on and off that will show the code. It's certainly not intuitive though.

I'll have to google that since I'm kinda curious what a truck with less than 1000 miles on it could have wrong. I don't care enough to go out of my way though, it's a loaner and not my problem.

Just got me thinking why a car that will tell me everything else I want to know all while blowing cold air on my taint through the seat, doesn't have such a simple feature.

Because you touch yourself.

Getting the code is easy, just stop at Autozone.

The code generally tells you a symptom.

Lean mixture bank one for example.

Now one needs to figure out if that is caused by clogged injector, faulty exhaust sensor, broken wire, bad connection, vacuum leak...

OBD11 is fairly standard on every car. This is not a big conspiracy. People who think the code tells you exactly the problem are the people that get screwed over.

Then the dealer can't charge you to check the code for "loose gas cap".
