Why don't brand new vehicles come with 5 year brake tags?

Because it's intended to verify that you have active insurance and have paid your registration.

Arkansas doesn’t do vehicle inspections, some of the rattle traps I see need some.

So they charge you money for it and refuse it to you if your window tint is too dark or you have a crack in the windshield?

17 states have required annual and bi-annual inspections, including the beloved Texas. That's a large chunk.

I don't like it, but I see the the merit behind it. If you let everyone drive a rust bucket about to fall apart at any moment, you're a danger to everyone else.

NJ you don't pay for the break tag check and they do stretch it further

At least in AZ it’s only emission testing they look at. And only if you live in PHX or Tucson metro areas.

Also....you don’t have to start testing your car until after it is 5 years old and then it’s only every other year.

This. Think about it. We have min standards to get a sticker. Imagine the death traps that would be on the road without.
