The Nazi Empire was much bigger.

At one point, German ruled from Scandinavia to the Sahara, from Russia to the English Channel.

The German Empire wasn't much of an empire. It held African colonies but not much else.

The Nazis also beat the French and damn near knocked the British out of the war. The Soviets damn near lost as well if Hitler had just let his generals run the Russian front.

Wtf is this? Japan actually had a navy and Air Force that could fight us one on one.

Probably for similar reasons that, although many southern states have had many different flags representing different times and circumstances in their history, the confederate battle flag which was in play for only a handful of years seems to overshadow them in the minds of many people.
