We have one anus but two sets of bilaterally symmetrical muscles that make up our buttocks. The crack is the separation between those two sets with the output part of out digestive system situated between them.

I've thought about this. You would constantly be able to smell each other's arse if we just had a hole. I think the crack helps us hide the stench and be more attractive to the opposite sex. Eventually, evolution took hold and people with the bigger asses were having more sex because they smelled better.
