For me, it natural shyness. I have overcome that but that was at least in part due to both my ex-wife and my current wife.
In addition to that, I think for a lot of guys who look at women as more that a potential sexual conquest it goes back to some bad initial experiences (this drove my actions for a while) and a complete inability to read subtle social cues (in hindsight, I missed a few).
Also, keep in mind, you ladies often exacerbate the situation for us "nice guys" because the guys you often look at as confident are really more arrogant than anything.

This is exactly what they say. My view on it is they aren't really getting enough action to justify this. They pretty much have one steady frick buddy.
