You can certainly choose to walk away from a conversation, but you don’t just “cut family loose”.

There are no singular, absolute, hard and fast rules that apply for every single person on the planet. So no, you don’t just have to put up with every manor of imaginable shittyness.

But to assert that there is no reason to put up with an imperfect family aside from a large inheritance displays a fundamental misunderstanding of who people are. Even bickering families add a huge amount of value to most people’s lives, so cutting them off cold turkey is rarely advisable. And I’d venture an educated guess that most people who do end up regretting it. That’s what I’m telling you.

Why? If someone is a terrible person? Why would you keep them in your life?

Define “terrible person” though. And no, you don’t just walk away from that. Your parents didn’t just walk away from you when you were a rebellious teenager did they?

All teens are rebellious. Not all families have toxic elements. I appreciate your responses. That’s all I wanted to know. I wanted insight into the mind of people who put up with drama instead of cutting the anchors that drown you.

No need for further discourse.

I chalk up a lot of the bitching as just venting because you can’t really vent to your family. This place is a mostly anonymous outlet where you can share trashy stories of your family.

We have drama every now and then, most of it quite petty, but I still cherish the time I get to spend with family on Christmas. I find a lot of the family drama stories highly entertaining and normalizing.

If you have one a-hole family member, they’re just an a-hole. If your whole family are assholes, well maybe you’re the one a-hole.
