Firestone wanted to change mine for like 50 dollars last time I was in for an oil change.

We had recently gotten the vehicle from her family and they had changed them all the month before.
I called a guy out for something similar. He owned up that it was simply recommended maintenance based on the vehicle mileage. So I’m other words the 50 pt inspection isn’t visual; they are simply reading a spreadsheet.

Most of you probably don't even realize your vehicle has a cabin air filter. The labor time on those are usually .5 hours or more which would lend to the reason it would cost $100 to change.
Last I checked, billable time should be in 15 minute increments. If a mechanic can't get the glove box dropped and the airfilter swapped in 5 min then he needs to find another line of work.

Filters for my vehicles are $14 to $25 from Wal Mart.

My elderly mother brought her Honda to the dealer to get an oil change. And she asked them to check her dome light as it wasn't working. They supposedly checked and told h er the whole light assembly had to be replaced including the wiring going to it.. $300. She didn't get it done and when I went to her ho u se a few days later I went to Auto Zone, bought a new bulb, popped it in and the light worked again.
So, they were going to change the bulb for $300.

Some lazy bastard wants me to change his air filter? Will I change it for 5 bucks? Um, no.
How about $20? No
$100? Maybe. Maybe not.

Why do n you hate capitalism you commie? You are paying for convenience, not the labor.

Because the labor rate at most dealerships is $125.00 per hour and they typically break even or lose money on the oil change. It’s good that you’re capable of changing your own filter. I bet you can cook a meal or pour your own drinks but you’ll pay 3 times what a meal costs and tip the server just so someone else will do it for you. Same concept.
