First off, the last man drafted Into the military was drafted in 1973. So before you cast aspersions on anyone, learn some simple arithmetic.

Second, your assertion that the lack of a draft is a reason to think serving is less heroic is a bit ludicrous. People used to join before their number came up so they would have a bit more flexibility in choosing their branch of the service vs getting assigned via the draft.

Third, sorry that your life is So devoid of people respecting you that you are jealous of people who get a little.

Ftr, I am not in any of those jobs and never served in the military.

I know you are thinking “yeah, right” but an officer that gets to colonel has a minimum of two degrees and, depending on how they handled their senior developmental education around the 17-20 year mark, very likely could have a second masters. The officers teaching at the service academies or places like the AF Institute of Technology are sent for doctorates prior to teaching graduate level courses.

He very well could have three degrees.

I don't know, but after reading the OP's post, I feel better about myself.

This is a BAD, bad take... You need to take a look in the mirror and re-assess yourself.

I’m thinking first of all “thank you for your service”, followed by, “This is TigerDroppings and we love to bust other poster’s chops in here.”

Then my apologies. Sorry to jump to the conclusion that you were supporting the OP’s position.

Assholes are like Dracula - they can't see themselves in the mirror. What I'm wondering is what and why he even thought of this angle about important people. We are all important in our on right -except for assholes like him

This country would be in bad shape if everyone thought like you.

I'm former military, and I'm one of those people you talk about that went into the military for my own personal reasons, but I knew a lot of people that had patriotism and did it because they want to serve their country and have a strong sense of duty. The military could not survive if it were full of people like me.

Said risk, by the way, is empirically and vastly more than the risk of most other professions.

True and I respect the job police and firemen do, no doubt. But both barely crack the top 25 from everything I've read in terms of fatalities per 100,000 in that line of work. I am all for heaping respect on police and firemen but why don't we hear as much or more respect heaped on fishermen and loggers whose fatality rates but the other two to shame from what I've seen.

I'm probably contradicting my argument above but I do consider anyone serving in the military in a class of their own and the ones most deserving of that respect.
