A beep on a computer could sound like anything. Someone decided that a beep should sound like the noise we know now. It could have sounded like anything. It is manmade sound so how did we end up with the commonly accepted beeps?

It’s a very tiny speaker meant to be made cheaply and fit onto a motherboard. It makes one sharp sound. It just makes that sound

From an electronics standpoint, it is easy to generate a beep sound, White said. All it takes to make a beep is a common electric circuit that produces a square wave, a simple type of signal that jumps back and forth between two levels, and a speaker to amplify it.
quote:
"If you take that square wave and throw it at a piezoelectric speaker or a magnetic coil type speaker, it will make a sound that is more less a pure tone with overtones, which is that beeping sound," White told Life's Little Mysteries, a partner site of LiveScience.

In short, beeps are cheap. Fenton said this is probably the main reason they've remained common in computer applications and other devices, even ones that contain higher-quality speakers capable of making more nuanced sounds.

Onomatopoeia. If it sounded like something else we wouldn't call it a beep.

A touch tone phone plays musical notes. But what song?

Onomatopoeia
Ever think the word might have come from the sound it made instead of the other way around?
ETA: dammit obtuse

The more important question here is how does a beep sound in Japanese?

I'll be doing my dopes in a few so I may come back here and see if I can get on your level.
