Any new regime will go out of it’s way to destroy the old. The communists took it to new levels though, look at Russia, but also look at China under Mao, and his Great Leap Forward.

By destroying traditional culture both hoped to cement their control over society, and clear the way for the improvements they wanted to implement. A people without history and culture were a blank slate. They would be whatever the communists wanted them to be.
