as far as atlanta vs houston crime...they are comparable. I also feel safer in houston and maybe thats because of familiarity, i dunno.

i grew up in the city in Houston, and then later on lived in suburbs for a few years. i live on the northshore now. i'll take the northshore over Houston suburbs a hundred times out of a hundred.

cant speak to the Dallas burbs. generally speaking they seem nicer than Houston these days.

the advantage that the northshore has over Houston and Dallas burbs is the lake / causeway. it really does act as a natural barrier to the, uh, urban youths. that same demographic flow in and out of the burbs in other cities much more easily and willingly because there isnt a big arse lake that takes half an hour to get across in the way.
