Why Conflict Is Healthy for Relationships
Three things you need to know about communicating consciously in conflict.
A large amount of research in the communication field has focused on conflict, since it is such an important and unavoidable part of being in a close relationship. Fortunately, that research has determined that conflict can be quite healthy for relationships.
quote:
1. Perhaps the Number One reason why conflict is healthy for relationships is that conflict signals a need for change, for both parties.
Conflict gives you a chance to work on the problems in your relationship.
2. Conflict shows you and your partner that your lives are interdependent.
If they weren’t, then you would not experience conflict, as conflict only comes about when two people whose lives are interdependent hold goals that conflict with one another.
3. Conflict is almost never about what it seems to be about on the surface.
Searching for the deeper reasons for conflict is an important step in improving a relationship, but is not easily done in the heat in the moment.

Got a lot of dudes out there who think the key to a happy marriage is being a stooge for their wife. They think they'll get "brownie points" from their wife if they just agree with her on everything. It turns out conflict is perfectly natural and healthy for relationships. It allows two people to genuinely respect each other as individuals, especially when that conflict is resolved in a healthy way.
We have a whole generation of chunked-up husbands driving minivans and being "yes men" for their wives, and they can't figure out why their wives don't respect them or have sex with them. We gotta be better than that bros.

So keep telling her to "calm down?"

Conflict is less fun between two people who do not genuinely respect each other, which happens a lot in marriage over the years. Then it just becomes ugly. Or resolves itself in a healthy way via divorce.

Yeah, but how did that lack of respect start? What's the root of that? The problem is not the conflict.

See Panama City murder suicide thread for why conflict isn't healthy in relationships.

Ha okay. Last time I fought back, she withheld sex for 2 weeks!
I sure learned my lesson!

I prefer "simmer". That generally works well.

When she has the pussy, and you want the pussy, conflict will resolve real quick.

I hate conflict in relationships. I'd rather her just slap me in the face than argue with me.

I know you're joking but there are obviously dudes who think that way. The problem is that she's using sex for leverage. Any woman who does this is destroying the meaning of sex in a marriage; she's cheapening it.
If sex is just a bargaining chip then why can't I use it too? How about if I threaten to go have sex with someone else if you won't do it? You have to communicate that with your spouse so that you both understand how ugly things can get if you use sex in that way.

This. I just don't see the point. Agree to disagree, and the issues are rarely large enough to truly influence behavior unless you make them.
And withholding sex?
I'd just withhold food. She will starve before I will. But that's moot. They get horny too, despite what they admit to.

Sometimes, allowing her to "win" is really a win for yourself and your marriage. She doesn't have to know it, but "losing" can really be winning.

And it's "normalized" in most modern television. Hot wife with usually a fat, slobby, spineless husband who's got the pussy on the pedestal.
