But they use to be, hence the name Icebox. And it's stuck over the years.

But why do people call a water heater a hot water heater? If it's already hot, it doesn't need to be heated.

A modem refrigerator, does NOT keep itself cold with ice, long ago it did, hence why some still call it an ICE BOX.

Ice comes in many forms. Long ago, it came in cubes and for this reason some still refers to it as ice cubes.
