What is it on the pump that causes this?

Usually a faulty diaphragm inside the handle of the pump. The air coming in while pumping can trip it which pops the handle out

The angle of the way it sits in a gas tank while filling can also throw it off for some pumps if gas is trickling into the air inlet

In my experience, it appears to be vehicle-related rather than pump. We have 1 car that almost always trips the pump and 2 others that never trip the same pump.

It’s possible for the nozzle to have an internal fault causing early shutofff but it’s pretty rare. Typically, no shutoff is a more common failure mode.

Very low or very high flow rate at the nozzle can aggravate shutoff issues so switching dispensers sometimes changes this (each dispenser has its own filter and a slightly different flow rate depending on the age of the filter and the dispenser position relative to the tank where the actual pump is at).

The sensing port (small hole at the bottom of the nozzle) can get clogged also.

Older, non vacuum assist, vapor recovery systems (bellows) can also slow venting of the car while filling and cause early shutoff.

But, in general, it’s a function of the vehicle and how fast the air can escape the tank and make room for the fuel coming in. If the air can’t get out fast enough and the fuel backs up the fill pipe it will trip the nozzle when the fuel enters the sensing port.

No idea but I don’t think there is anything more disgusting than the handle of a gas pump nozzle.

Pressure
Higher pressure will give a higher flow rate. Depending on your vehicle gas line will determine if you have a problem or not.

There is only one gas station in my area that I have an issue with in two of my vehicles. It takes hardly anytime to fill up.
