When airline pilots who survive crash aren't expected to reenter burning plane to check for survivors and ultimately die with the craft?

Because anyone can make a boat float.

Not many can make a plane fly.

Sounds like the South Korean captain never gave abandon ship order.

I don't know if that's to be taken seriously. The captain has ultimate authority to expedite and control the situation when it happens...hence, the last off the ship.

A plane has about 2 people.

It just seems like a barbaric expectation. It's almost like saying to the captain, "if your ship goes down, you die regardless if people are still on board or not....or forever be labeled a coward."

I don't think they're legally obligated to be the last one on board. They are expected to adhere to the emergency plan and direct the evacuation.

The captain from this ferry accident left on the first fricking life boat... While hundreds of children were still on board. Think about that.

This.

I don't think you're necessarily expected to doom yourself, but you better do all you can do to help preserve lives before you catch the first freakin lifeboat.

This sounds like an outdated "custom" from old tall ship days that has just kind of hung around in lore for years. I'd be off that frickin ship if it meant I would live, it's my fricking life.

ETA: After the women and children that is. frick the menz

The pilot is expected to get the plane on the ground or die trying. If he has a parachute and bails out leaving the passengers up there, he'll face the same consequences as a captain leaving the ship.

In the case of a crash landing at an airport, there are first responders there to take over immediately. In a scenario where they land in a remote area, the pilot is expected to organize the survivors and take charge of them until they're rescued.

Pretty fricking shitty. He has no business being in charge of a boat.

Yeah that is horrible. I would definitely do what I could to save myself, but never do anything like this.

I read an article about this when that Italian ship went down. They don't expect you to give up your life just because you're the captain. But you are legally responsible for following the evacuation plan and getting off as many as you can before abandoning ship.

This guy though... Hundreds of children on board, and he is one of the first to leave the boat.

Italian captain did same thing. So did Greek captain in the late 90's I believe.

You supervise the evacuation. You do NOT use your boating and maritime knowledge to make damn sure you are one of first off boat.
