Something to do with marrying little boys being illegal I would guess.

I couldn't imagine trying to live without sex.

Who says they are living without sex, I know a priest that has been having an affair with a married woman for at least 25 years. They basically hide in plain sight, he is highly respected in the community, and no one would ever believe they would be doing anything illicit.

Cause back in the day the upper echelon of clergy came from noble families and it was a way to ensure temporal lands of the church weren’t passed down from father to son.

Having a wife would take away significant time from guiding the parish to which they are assigned. Being a priest is like being on call 24/7.

This is not uniformly the case in the Catholic Church. Priestly celibacy is a particular discipline of the Roman Catholic Church that originated about 1000 years ago. Some of the Eastern Catholic churches allow priests to get married.

Also, as far as I know, there is only Biblical evidence that one of the apostles was married (Peter). More particularly though, we never hear about his wife, only his mother-in-law. So it's possible that he was a widower.

The first head of the Catholic Church (effectively the first Pope), the apostle Peter, was married, as were other apostles during Jesus' time. By the Middle Ages though, many priests treated their calling as a "family business," giving preference to their sons for plum positions in the Church and trying to edge out the competition to protect their legacy. Because of this practice, the Church formally banned the practice of priests marrying about 1,000 years ago.

In some of the Eastern Orthodoxes priests can marry, in some married men may become priests but cannot marry after going into the priesthood.

As for the Catholic Church, the sitting Pope can change this at any time.

For all the idiots downvoting me, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and preached the Baptist faith

You're the idiot. This is why John the Baptist is sometimes to referred to John the Baptizer, to avoid confusion with the Baptist denomination who mainly call themselves that because they baptize as adults. Jesus founded the Catholic Church, the original and first Christian denomination ever established; and appointed Saint Peter as the first Pope.

Baptists as a denomination didn't come for centuries until the 1600s.

That is pretty much what I was also told. It's really all about the money/property and not letting it get inherited outside of the church.
