The country and economy are aging. Birthrate is going to slow down.

It used to be a far left idea from the likes of Huey Long and George McGovern, but now it's becoming more popular in centrist circles. Andrew Yang, who few people would consider to be very left-wing, has popularized the idea.

The economy adjusts, but it's not always going to be painless. In other words, we can survive a population downturn as that will generally mean the assets from the prior, more populous generation will go further in the smaller successive generations and a tighter labor market helps push wage growth. On the other hand, supply and innovation might lessen during that adjustment period.

What?
Look I respect Yang, and he does a great job of pushing his ideas across clearly and concisely but he is about as far left economically as you can go without getting into the state seizing the means of production territory.

Yang was left-wing in 2020, but now his Forward Party is about as centrist as can possibly be.
Now, it's probably anybody's guess whether his left-wing persona was a farce, his current centrist persona is a farce, or whether he just tries to attract whatever audience he thinks will listen to him.
In any case, he's certainly now sold the UBI idea to people who are pretty centrist.

UBI is a popular idea with many of the tech far right.
It goes with all their ideas about society needing to move away from democracy so it can be more efficiently operated by an authoritarian leader, like a corporation CEO.
