The Great River Road region between New Orleans and Baton Rouge can lay claim to one of the more unusual public December holiday lighting displays you’ll find in Louisiana. It’s here on the earthen levees bordering the Mississippi River in St. James, St. John the Baptist and Ascension parishes that local Christmas lights aren’t colored bulbs, but instead dozens of 20-feet-high flaming pyramids of burning logs.

I'd drink a roadie or two on my way to see that. Pretty nice work.

Bonfires are built along the Mississippi River levee in the rural communities between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. On Christmas Eve night, the fires are all lit to light the way for Papa Noel. There are contests to see who can build the most creative bonfire, but most of the bonfires are in a traditional teepee shape. They start building them Thanksgiving week. It's a pretty good time, and a lot of cold beer and whiskey.

This seems like its gotten bigger and bigger every year. When I was a kid, it was just a few teepee style bonfires. It's definitely gotten more elaborate.

How many of them are there this year? I heard it was a lot.

The Gramercy Fire Department has been building some pretty elaborate bonfires over the years. A couple I remember from the late 80’s early 90’a were log cabins/ferry boats.

I rode the river road from the Gramercy Bridge North to Lutcher. Seamed like a few less than normal. My SIL has a house on River Road in Gramercy, they get first crack at the Bonfire Permit. I helped my brother in law twice, the 2nd time cutting trees down I caught poison ivy. I haven't helped him or been back since. There was a guy a few spots us from him that put 100,000 firecrackers in his fire.
