Still, I would shite my pants driving into that
I drove into it Friday night last as I crossed from Indiana into Illinois, headed west to California. Was stuck in the most insane shite for 3 days on I-80. Worst was about 3 am Saturday, just as I was exiting Des Moines. It was snowing so hard sideways that the road was invisible. And whereas before, you could follow the vehicle on front of you, there was no one else on the road. The only way to make sure I was on the actual road was to judge my distance from the reflectors on the post that the steel cable runs through that divides I-80. Needless to say I pulled into the next truck stop I came across and slept in my car until daylight.
Over those three days I saw literally dozens of jack knifed 18 wheelers. It's strange to be driving along and come across a tractor cab facing the wrong way, looking at you lol
At one point Sunday, in the span of an hour I counted 5 18 wheelers laid over on their sides, two being completely demolished.
Sunday afternoon I was stuck on Lyman, Wyoming, on I-80 in what was only supposed to be a two hour delay for multiple crashes ahead of me. When I got out to see how far the traffic went, the road was like a skating rink there was such a thick layer of ice on it.
Then that turned into 2 more hours. I said frick it, hit the median with enough speed to make sure I got across and I headed back east and found a way to make a loop and come back to 80 west of the crashes. I was shocked when I finally got back on 80 that there was no traffic coming from the east, which meant all those people were still just sitting there, waiting on it to open up.
What should have been a 2 day trip turned into 4 exhausting, insane days.
Never again. Anybody that lives above the Mason Dixon willingly and is willing to deal with that shite is fricking stupid.
I never, ever ever ever ever, want to go though something like that again.
I will say that I bought new tires for my vehicle back in June with the expectation of dealing with ice and snow like you find in the South Bend area where I was living and working. Having a good set of tires that were geared towards those conditions paid for themselves many times over. Only a couple times, in Nebraska when the wind was at it's worse, did I ever feel the back end of my car start to step out. And it was easy to control and bring the rear back into line. And it helped that I was going relatively slow, taking the conditions into account. Not that my a-hole didn't pucker.

Any smart driver would, yet they're at the mercy of the dumbass driving a semi behind them like a bat out of hades.
I lost so much respect over those 3 days for big rig drivers. They will blow past you at twice your speed, slinging dirty ice and snow like it's going out of style, with the air cushion they push trying to make you crash. Too many of them give zero fricks and just barrel ahead like it was a clear, warm, sunny day.

And people complain about having to drive in New Orleans.

Yankees are dumb AF.
No one (Dan Gurney excepted, per Brock) can drive on ice.
And every year, without exception, we see these same videos.
No contact patch means "no contact" with the surface

That's why the South closes roads. People can't handle the ice.

was major pile-ups in Indiana, MISSOURI , and Colorado for this storm, and they were all on I-70
Is a death wish in inclement weather at the moment on 70. State is in the middle of adding an additional 3rd lane for freight on both W. bound & E. bound 70.
If you enjoy a concrete coffin on your left and “Bob”, aka Abdullah the Butcher with California plates on your right.
By all means come travel the major thoroughfare right through the middle of our state.
As of today, they’ve completed a 40ish mile stretch in the middle of the state and are now progressing both directions. Just drove to KC and back for Thanksgiving, it was nerve racking w/o weather concerns. You’ll appreciate this, that 40ish mile stretch, they’ve eliminated the median and steel cables between E. & W. bound and it’s just concrete barrier and an 8-9 foot retaining wall…the carnage once the rut started was absolutely disgusting. Guess no one at MODOT figured Whitetails run North & South?

Plus a solid year in DeKalb, Illinois, in 24. I love the people but I'm just not built for their winters. That's why I'm going back to San Jose.
Plus $91 an hour is nice, especially working over/double time.
It's more than just on the surface. It's a completely different cultural mindset.
It's like when I'm in California and something bad happens, a fire or the like, and so many people here and especially the Poli board gloat and make the most vile statements about whatever the tragedy is. Saying shite like I'll prsy for the conservatives but the liberals can burn. Typical Louisiana/southerner hate.
I go out of my way to show them that stuff. To let them see just how sick a lot of the rest of the country is.
See, a Californian would never say they were glad a hurricane or tornado wrecked destruction on somewhere else in the country. If they said anything at all it would be condolences and sorrow for the suffering. They don't really think about the South. The South doesn't live rent free in their heads like California does in much of the South. I do my best to make them hate you as much as I can. They are always shocked at the unbridled hatred sent their way. Much of the rest of the country doesn't have the same black, diseased soul as much of the South does.

They also don't have the salt trucks or snow plows to deal with the winter weather. Just wait 24-48 hours and it usually melts away.

Yeah we get snow once every ten years and they laugh at us but they can’t drive in it either
Anyone can drive in snow. NO ONE can drive on ice. For northerners to claim some regional driving skill in the winter is just dumb.

About the only technique you can use is to be quick on the wheel, but not abrupt...
It's not quite like hydroplaning where you have to "wait", as long as you can, for the car to come back to you, if it will.
I doubt 1% of the population can do either with any degree of success, especially if they're driving a empty pickup truck.

Yankees make fun of us in the South for staying our asses at home when it snows, but at lest we don’t end up in 50 car pile ups because we think we can drive on ice.

Driving 18 in Oklahoma. We hit ice. Getting off the highway can be as dangerous as staying on. Off ramps climb to an overpass. I saw a truck stop sign and told my wife “We are done at the next exit, too much ice.”
She was in the sleeper with the flap down!
Suddenly she hears me say “shite” drivers kicked right, straightened out then “damn”drivers kicked left and we lost it…..jack knifed. Trailer blocked the road. Two cars went to the snow. Engine stalled. Started the engine and asked her “you alright?” Anything hit? Nothing. Climbed out touched the road and landed on my butt. Nothing but ice. I checked air lines and electric….looked back. Two semi’s had blocked the road at the overpass. I waved and they flashed their headlights. I climbed back inside. I had to drive west in the eastbound lanes.that’s where the first hint of fun began.
Drivers on the westbound lanes, on the CB started teasing about whether or not the road eastbound going west was better. I climbed the on ramp and turned around. Went the half mile, got into the truck stop and shut it down for the night.

Usually the roads are salted to prevent this kind of mess.
