From the way he dealt with dissent, the economy and the the outbreak of WW1, he was a terrible leader for the Russian people. Leaving Alexandra behind and giving her the reigns when he went to the front was disastrous and one of the last straws.

At the height of the war with Germany where the Russian people just absolutely had nothing but contempt for Germans, he put his German born wife in charge of things. The people saw her as a spy and it only helped the cause of the Bolsheviks.

Probably the truest answer to your question. Neither could have pulled it off without the other.

The Russian Revolution of October, 1917 that most people think of, led by Lenin/Trotsky, didn't overthrow the Tzar.

The Bolshevik revolution overthrew the provisional, quasi-democratic parliament (Duma) that had overthrown the Tzar in March, 1917, which is when Tzar Nicholas II (the "last" Tzar) abdicated the throne.

Between March and October, 1917 the Duma failed at effectively running the government which led to the Bolshevik Revolution overthrowing it to eventually put the Communist regime in power.

I wonder what the world would have been like if there were no October Revolution with the Provisional Government being overthrown and instead Russia was allowed to evolve and mature as a Western style democracy.

This. They literally shipped Lenin into Russia to destablize it during WWI. It worked to an extent, until their soldiers also started to mutiny.

Probably did as much or more to erode the Russian people's confidence in the Romanov Dynasty than anyone else.

In the Russian language the word "ras" means "first." The word "ftaroi" means "second."

So, a play on words that's been making the rounds in Russia for several years is "The Tzar had Ras-putin. Today we have "ftaroi-Putin."

IDC, I just know the USSR should have been preemptively wiped out after WW2. The world would be a much more peaceful place.

Far better place.

There would be nobody to support Mao and nobody to set upntge Kim regime in North Korea. No Vietnam War. No violent leftist regimes in Latin America (which makes the violent right wing regimes unlikely as well). No Red Scare in the US. We get to save all the money we spent on NATO.

Read ‘Animal Farm’

Great book that easily explains why communism is always doomed to fail.
