I rented a car while in Grand Cayman in the early 90's and it had a stick shift. It was the cheapest car I could get.
It was all good until I realized that they drove on the left side of the road. Took a few blocks to get the handle of it and it sure was fun on their round abouts.
I definitely got the collision damage waiver on that rental.

Took my driver test in a 4 speed Chevette. Parallel parking was a breeze.
I took my driving test in a 1969 C20 long bed pickup with 3 on the tree. I parallel parked that sucker for the first time when I took that test. Spot on perfect. When it came time to weave in and out of the cones the lady giving me the test asked if I thought the truck would fit and I told her I thought it would. She "said stop here"... and got out and moved the cones further apart. She got back in and said "I think it will fit now". Did it perfectly. Three on the tree, no power anything. Passed with flying colors. Times were so much more simpler in 1981.

You gotta hold the light where I can see, not where you can see dammit.....have been told that, have told it to others...and truer words never spoken in either case....

I did. 1977 Chevy Custom Deluxe, 3 speed on the column
I learned how to drive stick on an early 80s Lx mustang.
I remember when I was helping out this older guy in the late 80s and he had an old ‘71 f-150 with 3 on the tree.
He asked me if I could drive a stick.
I was like, hell yeah! Then when I saw it
I was like, what eff is this?!

I learned to drive in a '69 F-100. Had a three on the tree, rim blow horn, no power steering and drum brakes all around. The 360 wasn't that fast, but made a good amount of low end torque.
Overall, it was a nightmare for 15 YO me to learn on.

I learned to drive a clutch on the driving range ball picker upper at Sherwood Forrest Country Club in the mid nineties.
And if any of you assholes who are a few years younger than me that went to the summer youth golf camp there and hit balls at me all day….frick you.

I leaned on a 1994 corolla. My parents never owned an automatic till I moved out. I drive a stick now. It was 2500 bucks cheaper than the auto.

My dad's 2001 Chevy S10 ZR2, first on the roads of a hunting camp near Angola and then on the roads in the Centennial Valley around Red Rock Lakes NWR on the Montana/Idaho border.
Simpler times.

Didn’t own a vehicle with auto trans until I was 40. My wfe and all my children learned to drive a standard transmission. Ford Ranger w/3 speed on the floor and a Datsun 210. They bitched and whined about it but I told them if they learned to drive a manual transmission, they could drive anything. I told them they would eventually thank me………and they eventually did.

I did not but did know how by time I got out of high school .. friends taught me
I bought an old car with clutch and it was the first car and high school car for my three kids.. I believed everyone should know how in case in an emergency and only vehicle around has a clutch.
My wife learned how to drive in a clutch car in San Francisco… learned how to park that thing on a hill there also.
