Lightning Joe Collins is an under the radar candidate. Similar accomplishments as Patton and he did it with less resources and took fewer casualties.

Lee, he did more with less. Stonewall Jackson
WT Sherman-he knew how to wage war
George Washington-he killed mofos on Christmas and also did more with less.

Benedict Arnold would be up there if he didn't turn

Pretty sweet monument to his boot at Saratoga, the one thing he sacrificed for the US.

It's Washington and it's really not even close, what other general can you say that without him we would have lost the war?

He may not have won very often, but his ability to keep the army together over those first years was impressive.

Not a U.S. General.

I suppose, be he is American and a General; Superintendent of West Point as well. I think an exception can be made here.

My mind immediately went to Patton probably because of George C Scott's portrayal of him.

I was coming here to submit his name as well

Look at the condition of US forces and how he transformed our military during his tenure

He set the foundation for our becoming the preeminent global power we are today

6 wins, 7 losses and 4 draws during the revolution. May have helped coin the term, lose the battle, but win the war.

This discussion wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Chesty Puller,,,,Patton can’t be a candidate, too much ego, caused a lot of US casualties to prove himself

There are too many to count. One to remark on was Gen. Collins, he served in the New Georgia and Guadalcanal campaigns, then lead the 82nd Airborne into D-day landings in Normandy.

Very few crossed theaters. He was the youngest division commander at that time.

Really, there are a lot of great ones. Merritt Edson was a good marine general.

I was always told he did have the 6th star. Just looked it up—he had the equivalent rank “General of the Armies” but not the official 6th star. So technically no 6th star but the equivalent rank. Weird.
