I am - but I worked at Walmart when I was going full time to college - and I was there for the Buzz Lightyear and Tickle Me Elmo craze.

people being attacked walking out with their lay-a-way boxes and having the 2 toys stolen. got bad enough we had to have security escort them from the store, and in some cases taking them out the back door of Lay-a-way and driving them to their car by security cart.

black Friday at our store was always guaranteed at least 4 to 5 fist fights over merchandise.

Can something be sad and awesome at the same time?

I remember my mom talking about it and how she ended up getting mine.

I saw some at an estate sale a while back for like $15.

I don’t remember the riots, but I had an aunt who collected the fricking things. She probably had 200 of them in “the doll room.” Lost them all in a house fire in 2003. She was one of those people who bought commemorative plates and shite thinking they would really be worth something one day. Multiple china closets full of crap.

My sister was 13 in 83’ but still wanted one - but was thankfully old enough to understand that it was a low probability that she’d get one at Christmas due to the demand and rumors of scraps to get them.

My mom and grandmother were out at Cortana on Black Friday in 83’ and came home with one. My mom said it was busy and chaotic but there seemed to be enough to go around for the people there - and there weren’t any fights or riots. But she did say, it was chaotic.

Riots? They were the big thing that year though.
