Mayor-President's office has no control over the school district.

And he's also spent a great deal of time on infrastructure improvements and job creation.

There are like 4 people on the council where either most, or half of their district includes St. George

And the entire parish is split evenly among the 12 districts via population.

Baton Rouge has the highest credit rating of any municipality or parish in the state and is fiscally sound. Parish taxes are lower in EBR than Ascension, or Livingston. Total city and parish taxes in the city of Baton Rouge are lower than Zachary, Denham, Walker, and Central.

He has proposed nothing to better schools

Well, I would hope not. He has zero power over the EBR school system, which is a completely separate entity.

The irony in all this is that the "St. George" area of Baton Rouge has received the lion's share of infrastructure projects and improvements while Kip has actually neglected North Baton rouge.

In what way?

He has proposed nothing to better schools

That's not his responsibility. What would expect him to do?

quote:

is soft on crime

How is he soft? Last time I checked, the murder rate in BR dropped by 20 percent last year.

favors more spending on poorly run social programs

Like which?

It doesn't matter. All the BR City people who can't vote, go to Nicholson Drive and ride your imaginary streetcar to downtown. Get some food from a food truck.

It doesn't matter what you think. St. George WILL happen.

Why can't they just have their own school district and this will all go away then?

You'd need money to fund schools, law enforcement, sewage, water, roads, etc. .. along with other intangible infrastructure .. A city ain't cheap ..

fund schools-The people in the area have been funding schools,,, the schools just haven't been built in their area to keep up with enrollment, which is part of the reason they want out of the school system.

law enforcement-The Sheriff's department currently has jurisdiction over the area and will continue to do so if St. George happens.

sewage--handled by a private company already. Why wouldn't they want to continue to have customers? The city has nothing to do with the sewage.

water--see above about sewage. Same situation.

roads--paid for by the parish just as they are now. Why would incorporating have to change that?

It would have. But the State Legislature said no, you must make a new city.

Well, why doesn't the state legislature just say yes so the capital city doesn't go to complete shite? And don't give me some bullshite about the state constitution. This is LA, it doesn't mean shite.

How have they not been built to keep up with enrollment? Are the current schools in St. George overcrowded?

DPW runs sewage. Not BR water.

They don't have legislative support to do so.

The anti-St. George people have a better shot at helping get the new school district through the legislature, than they do at defeating the City of Sy. George movement.

There has been some development efforts made in the area. There is Howell Place. There is also the Coca Cola building, and some mixed-use developments near the area. It may still not seem much compared to St. George, but you have to start somewhere.
