Who has high cholesterol? Just had test done for life insurance and I was hit with high overall cholesterol. My ldl's are under 200 but my hdl is low, and my triglycerides are high at 168.

I pop 3 fish oils a day, exercise, take a spoon of olive oil or coconut oil a few times a week.

Could the triglycerides be due to carbohydrate intake and low fiber? Those are my only two obvious problems.

Forget the oils and just cut your carbs. Carbs turn into LDL and transported to fat cells once your liver's glycogen stores are full. Humans weren't made to consume massive quantities, only enough for 2 days energy.

Depends on activity levels. Burn more than you intake.

My overall cholesterol is high but I have high HDLs and super low Triglycerides so my Dr. wasn't too concerned.

He said Triglycerides is a function of aerobic activity.

High triglycerides are often associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Your LDL (bad) cholesterol should be 60-135 and your HDL (good) cholesterol greater than 45.

I take a combination of a low-dose statin and prescription niacin. Other than exercise, niacin is the only way to raise your HDL. My numbers have been good since I went on this regimen several years ago.

I would get your calcium score and check your particulate size. Your combination of readings isn't encouraging.

I'm on a statin - but even uncontrolled with a high overall number, I had a pretty manageable LDL range, my HDL has always been good and my triglycerides have been decent. My dad had all kinds of trouble with his triglycerides, especially after he developed Type II Diabetes - he had some blockages, an occlusion, needed a CABG - just the whole smash.

Had it. Started exercising/ running again and eating a little better and I'm good now.

It runs in my family so it's a harder fight than it should be. Definitely have to watch my cholesterol intake.

No, I never had that reaction but it is supposed to be fairly common. But like statins, niacin should be taken at bed time so unless you glow in the dark flushing is not really a problem.

Depends, but it's the transportation of extra carbohydrates to fat cells in the form of LDL that's responsible for plaque build up, as well as genetics. Inflammation makes these plaques unstable and prone to causing acut strokes and heart attacks.
You can help maximize your genetics by limiting carbs to fruits in the morning and green vegetables. that way you're intaking only about what most active adults will burn, and your LDL should drop (since u won't have leftovers to store)

Don't smoke and eat some antioxidants and that'll keep what plaque buildup you do have from acutely rupturing and causing a stroke or heart attack.

Mine is high just looking at numbers. But my ratio of total:hdl is good and my triglycerides are good. I don't worry too much about it since I'm in pretty good health.

Even if you're old, NoHo, aren't you a gal? I don't think gals have to worry much about heart disease. Y'all are the ones killing us, remember?

I did drink a few margs the night before. Wonder if that will have had an acute effect.

My hdl was 55 and ratio was 5.

Th scale that the insurance company gave me is 140-200 is okay. So you'd be low, I'm guessing.
