Unfortunately I join the club tomorrow morning. I was supposed to be driving to Columbus for an all weekend concert and instead I have to undergo an emergency procedure tomorrow. It was the shock of my life. Hopefully, it's successful or I'll be getting bypass surgery next week.

What am I in for regarding recovery to those who have been there?

For those that haven't please get your regular checkups. This went from a little noise to a failed stress test to a 3D Heart CT to this procedure in less than a week.

Stents are routine.

But how old are you? You are likely headed to a CABG eventually.

I'm 54. The blockage is in the main feeder artery. 70% up top and 100% as it nears the bottom.

Stop smoking. Get your lipids under control. Having blockages that significant in early 50s isnt good.

Haven't been a smoker for a long time (over 20 years). However, I am diabetic but not overweight.

Mom did both (I think) Is the angioplasty when they go through your inner thigh?

She said that hurts like a bitch. Hospital charged her insurance 33k just for the stent, not the procedure. I need to learn how to make stents.

You will need to undergo lifestyle changes but you can assume normal activities within days. It would be immediate but the femoral or radial artery is accessed and you will have to slightly limit activities to avoid bleeding complications. Expect to take plavix or effient daily.

I had an angioplasty with stent emplacement in my circumflex artery at age 45 in June 1997. The procedure is no big deal for most.

I, unfortunately, coded that night and that was just the beginning of a bad summer. I was given a drug called Ticlid, that I turned out to be the one in a bazzilion of whom had an allergic reaction. It shut down my immune system. In August of 1997 I was told that I was going to need a bone marrow transplant and should not expect to see my 46th birthday in September.

I am one of two people in the world (the other a man in France) who survived the experience without a bone marrow transplant. It just goes to show that only the good die young.

I am sure that yours will be uneventful. Good luck!

Thanks. I believe the plan is to go in through my wrist. I've read that it isn't as bad as going through the leg.

Ticlid is now off the market

Replaced by plavix which is very safe

The diabetes is the problem. Tigh control or you will go downhill quickly.

Radial approach is awesome. You could still go to Columbus this weekend. You may not even have to stay the night.

Two close friends of mine, both active, athletic non-smokers with no heart history wound up having emergency stents. Both about my age (64 today, BTW). One of them literally died on the table. I have had no symptoms but you can bet I have an appointment for a complete cardio workup next week. I, too , have diabetes (Type 2). Have it under control but I ain't taking any chances.

Best of luck to you !

Heart doc nixed the weekend travel. I'm ok with that. It was going to be a hard partying weekend and short on sleep.

Cosmo,

Thanks for being so frank. This has been an eye opener. While I do take diabetes seriously I can certainly step it up a notch or two. My A1C could use some improvement.

I'm currently sitting in a hospital room with my dad, who's 57, who just had a triple bypass on Tuesday. This is miserable and frustrating at the same time, mainly because it's mostly preventable. Seeing him like this has opened my eyes up a bit to what my future could hold if I don't take care of myself now. Good luck man, hopefully he and you can make the necessary life changes to live a long, healthy life.

THe last stent my mom had they put in through her wrist .. I shite you not. There are qualifying factors for that but Idk what they are.

She had several stents put in over the years ... She's sensitive to anesthesia so that was the worst part for her.

Good luck.
